Barred Owlets

My owl neighbors are very habituated to me, so I get to watch them closely without scaring them. These two are nearly ready to start climbing about on the sugar maple’s branches…

…and two days later, one of them does. Just about dusk, he or she is blown to the ground, but mama is soon there to help guide it up a tree. The little ones can climb like parrots, using their beaks and feet. Two days later I saw Mama delivering a vole to it… about 40 feet up! The sibling did not venture out for a few more days and they were fully fledged by the end of May.
